On our labor

Why it is worth a glazier

Most of this is a cut nobody stocks

Cabinet glass, a shelf for an awkward alcove, a top for a table somebody made, the pane in a hutch door that has been empty for two years. None of it is a standard size, which is exactly why it tends to sit undone.

It is also small work, and small work is what a lot of companies will not come out for. We will, and we will tell you honestly when it makes more sense to fold it in alongside something else at the same house.

What we cut

Four kinds of job, one shop

All of it measured on site or cut to a template you bring in, and all of it made rather than picked off a shelf.

  • Built-in hutch with glass-front cabinet doors in a Central Texas home.

    Cabinet and shelf glass

Doors and shelving in clear, etched, or any of the patterns. The pattern changes how much of the contents you actually see, which is usually the real decision rather than the look of the glass itself.

  • Wet bar with a glass-front upper cabinet.

    Wine rooms

Framed or frameless glazing for a climate-controlled room, where the glass is holding a temperature difference as well as showing the bottles. Specified for the room rather than ordered as a kit.

  • Glass-topped patio table.

    Tabletops and protective tops

A top for a table that deserves one, cut to the shape and finished at the edge. Also the clear top that stops a timber or stone surface taking the damage.

  • Glass shelving above a vanity in a Central Texas home.

    Shelving and specialty cuts

Floating shelves, alcove shelving, and the one-off piece that does not belong to any category. If you can describe it or photograph it, we can usually tell you whether it can be made.

Choosing the glass

Clear, etched, or patterned, and the choice is about what shows

Clear glass shows everything, which is the point in a wine room and a nuisance in a pantry. Etched and patterned glass lets the light through while breaking up what is behind it, and how much it breaks up varies a lot between patterns.

That is the decision worth spending a minute on, and it is much easier to make with the samples in front of you than from a description. Ask when we come out to measure.

  • Clear, for cabinets where the contents are the display
  • Etched, where you want light but not detail
  • The full pattern range, which varies in how much it obscures
  • Cut to your opening rather than to a stock size

Worth knowing

Safety glass cannot be altered once it is made

Anything tempered, which includes most tabletops and any shelf carrying real weight, is made to its final size and then tempered. After that it cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed.

So the measurement is the job. We would rather take it ourselves, or work from a template you bring in, than from a number read off a tape in a hurry.

What a customer says

  • This was a small job and other companies I talked with would not come out or would charge a large fee just to look at the problem. Very pleased with the people and the service.

Questions

What homeowners ask us

Will you do a job this small?

Yes. What we will tell you honestly is when a small job needs its own trip and what that costs, versus folding it into other work at the same house. Ask rather than assuming the answer is no, because quite a lot of what we do is one piece of glass.

What is the difference between clear, etched and patterned?

How much of what is behind the glass you can see. Clear shows everything. Etched softens it to light and shape. Patterned varies a great deal depending on the pattern, from barely obscuring to almost opaque. It is much easier to choose with samples in front of you, so ask when we come to measure.

Can I bring in a template instead of having you measure?

For a tabletop or an odd shape, yes, and sometimes it is better than a measurement. Bring the template to 304 Main Street. For anything fitted into a cabinet or an alcove we would rather measure it ourselves, because those openings are rarely as square as they look.

Can glass be cut to a curve or an odd shape?

Often, and it depends on the glass and the shape. Send a photo or a drawing with dimensions and we will tell you whether it can be done before you plan around it.

Do you do wine rooms?

Yes, framed or frameless. A wine room is glazing that holds a temperature difference as well as showing the bottles, so it is specified for the room rather than ordered as a kit. Tell us the opening and what the room is doing and we will come back to you.

My cabinet doors have empty panels. Can you fill them?

That is one of the most common jobs we get. Bring a door in, or we will come and measure, and you choose between clear, etched and the patterns. It is usually quicker and cheaper than people expect.
